| Embedded Diagnostic Unit -- EDUchat software
Sine Systems' factory warranty has expired on all Embedded Diagnostic Units. Customers should contact Continental Electronics Corporation for all service and support matters regarding the EDU. The EDU has reached the end of product life from Sine Systems, Inc. The final software release and documentation update are available from this site.
Please read the product release notes before installing and running this software. All users should verify that the profile in use is correct. There have been some problems with the profiles that are shipping from the factory. Your data files are not corrupt but there will appear to be errors if the profile is incorrect.
System Requirements:
- Personal computer with (minimum) 486Dx/2 66 MHz processor, 8 Mb of RAM and approximately 5 Mb of available hard disk space for installation (does not include space for data files)
- Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups already installed on your computer
- One 3.5 inch high density (1.44 Mb) floppy disk drive
- A standard VGA monitor or better (640 x 480 minimum; 600 x 800 is recommended)
- A Windows compatible printer (optional)
- A 2400 baud modem or better (optional)

EDUchat current release software version c3.02
Documentation for EDUchat software version c3.02 in PDF format
These files are the final software release of EDUchat software. Version c3.02 is necessary for Y2K compliance with this product. Dates are displayed with the century digits and a new calendar programming routine has been added. Data and profiles are interchangable from previous software versions. File formats have not changed.
The program file is approximately 3.2 Mb. The documentation file is approximately 245 Kb and requires an Adobe Acrobat reader.
Instructions for downloading and installing software updates:
- Download the EDUchat software update from the links above. The file that you receive will be a self-extractacting, compressed file. Place this file in a temporary directory on your hard disk by itself and make that directory the default directory.
- Extract the contents of the compressed file by executing the retrieved file. The archive will expand into three files: Setup.exe, Setup.W02, and Setup.W03.
- Run Setup.exe from Windows Program Manager. The install routine will suggest a directory for the EDUchat installation. You may change this directory, but do not choose the temporary directory where the setup files are running. We strongly suggest answering 'yes' to the prompt for making a backup of files that are replaced during installation.
- Toward the end of the installation, a message will be displayed that simply says 'Updating system. Please wait...'. This may take a few moments so don't be alarmed. Some library files are being registered with the system. Windows may need to restart when this is complete. That depends on what gets installed to your system. If you receive a message that says 'Windows must be restarted' but the system does not actually restart, exit Windows and restart manually. On some systems, the restart command fails.
- If you want to keep a backup, copy these new files to diskettes. Copy 'Setup.exe' to disk 1, 'Setup.W02' to disk 2, and 'Setup.W03' to disk 3.
- When the installation completes successfully and you have copied the files to backup diskettes, you can delete the files Setup.exe, Setup.W02, Setup.W03 and the temporary directory.
Verify your Profile
Users should check their profile(s) for the following errors. Many of the status channels have incorrect 'polarity' due to a bug in early software versions. The data from the EDU is correct but the translation routine that converts the data will reverse the polarity inappropriately. There have been some cases where profiles were generated with some of the channels out of proper order.
The data files are correct and are not corrupt! They must simply be retranslated through a repaired profile.
The table below shows the channels in the correct order and with the proper polarity. Please edit your profile as necessary to reflect this table. This table supercedes all other information on this subject to date. Detailed instructions for editing the profile are located in the EDUchat Software Guide.
The steps required to correct this problem are:
- Make a backup copy of your profile and data files before you start editing.
- Select File|Open|Profile from the menu bar
- Edit the profile until the status indicators match the table
- Select File|Translate from the menu bar to correct the data files
The profile is saved automatically as you edit and changes cannot be undone once they have been made. We strongly recommend that you make backup copies before you begin editing. Data files are not corrupted by the translation process. A copy of the initial data is stored in every data file. Translation through a new profile is always possible without corrupting the data. Make backup copies anyway!

Do not forget to retranslate the data files with the new profile after the corrections are complete. EDUchat does not do this automatically. |
