Reprogramming the Main Security Code in the RFC-1?

One of the most common tech support questions goes something like this, "I reprogrammed the main security code and now when I call the RFC-1 it just hangs up on me." On a normally working system, in other words as long as it hasn't been hit by lightning or is suffering from a telephone line issue, this means that the security code entered does not match the one stored in memory.

The solution is pretty simple but you have to be on site with the RFC-1 operating it from the local telephone, the one connected directly to the RFC-1. (This isn't meant to be aggrevating, it's a security feature.) Once on site, take control of the RFC-1 with the local telephone by pressing the local control button on the front of the relay panel. The RFC-1 will identify itself with the site identification phrase when the button is pressed.

To read and optionally reprogram the main security code, enter the command 72. The RFC-1 will repsond with "main security code:" followed by several digits (8 digits max). Then it will say "press # (pound) to reprogram". Make a note of the security code. If any digits are announced as 10 they are blank--unused digits that don't need to be entered.

If you only want to read the current code then you are done. Enter 99 and hang up.

If you want to change the security code, press the # key after the prompt. The RFC-1 will respond with "enter 8 digit main security code". Enter up to 8 digits for the new main security code. If a shorter code is required, enter the digits that you want to use then press the * key until you have entered 8 keystrokes total. The RFC-1 will say "OK" when 8 keystrokes have been entered. You are done. Enter 99 and hang up.
